Today it was announced in THR that Showtime along with "Dexter" executive producer Sara Colleton have picked up Vertigo's Exterminators as a potential "drama". Created by Simon Oliver and Tony Moore, the comic centers on an ex-con who joins an exterminator company, working with a freakish supporting cast of characters. A mystery surrounding his girlfriend and the manufacturer of an insect poison percolates on the periphery, and the insects are much more dangerous than they seem.
Personally I have never read the comic but I am finding it hard to believe that they are going to be able to squeeze out a drama with that material. However if they plan to go the route they did with Dexter I think I will be rather pleased. The television version of the comic is said to revolve around the Bug-Be-Gone crew, an extended dysfunctional family of exterminators whose greatest enemies aren't the insects and rodents they meet and kill on a daily basis but rather their own self doubts, vices and inner demons.
The thing that is ironic about this whole project is that writer Simon Oliver originally intended for the idea to be a television series. I guess it just takes a little more to convince these big wigs like Showtime that you have something big.
