Howdy pardners! Your buddy Drumm reveals to you his favorite hits of the last few weeks.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: You’d think a book would go downhill once the main character takes a dirt nap, but that’s not the case here. Bucky/Winter Soldier was an obvious choice to take up the shield, but its not cheesy or overly predictable. This isn’t a Kyle Raynor deal here. It’s an organic change. Brubaker is doing a great job and things are only going to get better, especially because this Cap packs heat. I can’t wait to see more Tony Stark here, because his road to redemption is best presented in Cap’s book.
ROBIN: I don’t see why people consider ROBIN to be the bottom of the ladder in the Bat-Verse. It’s been a steady and solid book for some time now. Tim Drake has proved himself to be one of DC’s most reliable characters, and he continues to grow into adulthood at an organic pace. His rogues gallery is kinda boots (anyone remember Johnny Warlock?), but the return of Spoiler could really propel the book. It could end up being a clone of the Batman/Jason Todd returns saga, but whatever. Chuck Dixon is writing it so it’ll be classic Robin all the way.
NEW AVENGERS: This book RULED before CIVIL WAR. And ya know what? It still does. Luke Cage? Seriously? Luke Cage is the dramatic focus of a popular comic book? Yeah dude, I can’t believe it either. This whole Skrull thing is going at a snail pace, but will go into crazy mode when SECRET INVASION hits, so I’m enjoying them beating the crap out of The Hood’s co-op in the meantime. I would however like to see more Ronin/Clint Barton here. He kinda fades into the background, as does Iron Fist. It’s a big team, but really its Luke Cage’s book. And that’s ok with me.
MOON KNIGHT: Just how crazy is this motherf&%$!? Maiming dudes, cutting dudes up. Oh, and talking to dead people. Since Mike Benson took over for Charlie Huston, the issues seem kinda short and the pacing is a little off. Black Spectre is coming back, so I expect some serious ass kicking soon. But in the meantime I like Marc and Marlene’s broken relationship. Although now that she knows about some of his “extracurricular” activities, getting her back in bed might be a little difficult. Hopefully it’ll pick up a little, but I’m looking forward to Moony’s streak of awesome continuing.
DAREDEVIL: Gritty, gritty, gritty. Daredevil’s life sucks. It always has. And that’s what makes his book so great. Dead or crazy girlfriends, public ruin, you name it and he has lived through it. His current ladylove is hopping on the crazy train (big surprise), and DD is taking it pretty hard. I love how he is resorting to doing things he never would (like torture) to lay his fists on Mr. Fear. I’m looking forward to this coming to an end, but my question is what happens when The Hood sets his sights on Hell’s Kitchen?
X-FORCE: Finally! X-folks killing people! “Messiah CompleX” was great, and it was partly because they completely let themselves go. The X-Men were blasting evil humans without holding back, and honestly it was a relief. There hasn’t been that much action I don’t know how long. With X-FORCE, its straight up killing all the time. Wolverine joined the Avengers because they needed a killer, and X-Force is no different. Its surprising the hell out of me that it was Cyclops’s idea, but the result is a bloody good time so I’m interested to see where it goes.
