Hancock Unrated DVD Review
DVD News, movie reviews — By Geeker on December 1, 2008 5:46 pm
I went out and picked up a copy of HANCOCK on DVD to buy this week and ended up getting the un-rated version of course. Hancock made $600million at the box office so I had high expectations for the film. The fact the cast is outstanding also made me want to see it. You really can not go wrong with Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman.
I must point out at the start of this review that to this day I am still severely pissed off at the DVD art the studio chose to use. The DVD art gives away the biggest twist in the movie and effectively RUINS the film goers experience. It is the first time I have ever picked up a dvd and had the major plot point ( which is a good one ) spoiled for me. I am not giving away the spoiler in this review but if you want to see it you can go here and read my earlier ‘rant’ about it.
The film itself is exactly what you would expect from Will Smith and his production company. Its glossy, its over the top, its funny and its somewhat dark. It appeals to a mass audience and doesnt offend anyone. It also is of course PG 13 rated. So its a block buster in the making. Throw into the mix Charlize Theron who is way to hot, and Jason Bateman who is funny in everything and you have a cast that is both quirky and entertaining without being to terribly cliche. Will Smith delivers a strong performance as the hero who really just does not give a crap. He is not a hero, he is not a villain he just quite simply does not give two hoots what happens around him. He likes to get drunk and fly, he throws cars around skyscrapers like they are pebbles and he loves to bring chicks back to his double wide trailer to get it on.
Overall Hancock is really well done with a story that is both interesting and fun and the biggest let down of the entire film really is the lame ass dvd art which RUINED the film for me. Hopefully nobody else had the plot twist ruined. Charlize Theron stands out in this film since she is a really strong actress and if anything I think at times she out did herself and ‘stood out’ in the film since her acting was so much stronger then Will’s and Jasons. Overall I have to say its a fun action film, its got lots of great things going for it and you should definitely check it out. If you like comic book flicks ( which you should ) and or your a fan of Will Smith you will really digg this flick.
Hancock was directed by Peter Berg and written by Vy Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan. The film was executive produced by Ian Bryce, Jonathan Mostow and Richard Saperstein; produced by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Mann, Will Smith, and James Lassiter.
