It seems as though The Wizard of Oz has always had kind of darker side to it that has appealed to several people. So much so that awhile back a small comic publisher, Caliber Comics published a whole series. Storyline follows an older Dorothy Gale in a "gothic and more macabre" setting as she journeys through Oz with the characters known to millions via Frank L. Baum's "Wonderful Wizard of Oz."
Today Variety is reporting that Hip hop artist Pras Michel has optioned both film and TV rights for the comic. Now I know what you are thinking. A Hip hop guy? Yea well this should put you at ease, he is also producing another upcoming flick that shows a lot of promise The Mutant Chronicles. So I'm willing to let his career as a rapper for the Fugees slide along right now since he seems to be in the right place.
Screenplay was adapted from the work of original comic creators Aaron Denenberg, Ralph Griffith and Stuart Kerr with plans to begin production at the end of 2008. Pic will be a live-action version of the comic trilogy, which Michel intends to produce as three separate films. In addition to producing duties, Michel plans to star as the Scarecrow.
