The best way to sum up wanted is with the words 'Holy Shit'. This is effectively the coolest damn movie I have seen in quite some time. The movie firmly blows past the days of George Clooney and Val Kilmer playing batman and the heart throb of the week putting on tights to play a hero. Mark Millers Wanted directed by russian director Timur Bekmambetov firmly redefines what a comic book movie can be and grabs you by the balls and just makes you squeel. The premise of this mind blowing and altering film goes as follows;
Based upon Mark Millar’s explosive graphic novel series and helmed by stunning visualist director Timur Bekmambetov—creator of the most successful Russian film franchise in history, the Night Watch series—Wanted tells the tale of one apathetic nobody’s transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. In 2008, the world will be introduced to a hero for a new generation: Wesley Gibson. 25-year-old Wes (James McAvoy) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut.
Until he met a woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie). After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad’s death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors—including the Fraternity’s enigmatic leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman)—Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.
Wanted is one of those movies that is hard to define. It is somewhat The Matrix with combinations of The Usual Suspects. One thing is for sure with Iron Man and Dark Knight hogging the spot light this bad boy does not get the recognition it deserves. Its down and dirty with its R rating, it gives us a great ass shot of Angelina Jolie and it delivers more bullets flying then you can beat a 3 legged dog with. Seriously... this is the definition of a well written action movie and is one of the best I have seen in a very long time. It puts aside the deep writing and the angst of Dark Knight and the witty writing of Iron Man and goes straight for the jugular proving that yes... R Rated movies can make money and can deliver an experience that is worth watching over and over again.
Although the movie starts off a bit slow it quickly builds up momentum showing off the full talents of its top notch cast which includes of course Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy. I can not say I have honestly seen much of James or his talents before now but hot damn does he deliver as the cubicle dweller turned ass kicking assassin. As the movie progresses the story builds, and then throws you a curve ball as cool as a bullet that moves sideways. Without question WANTED is the fantastic movie it is for the last 30 minutes. Seriously fun times with some great writing... great action and enough F words to do any sailor proud. I can not encourage you all enough to go out, buy a copy and check this bad boy out. It is truly.... outstanding.
